The goddess of grunge, Courtney Love, has launched an exclusive clothing collection in collaboration with the U.S. brand Nasty Gal. The ‘Love, Courtney’ line takes inspiration from the Hole front woman’s personal wardrobe, it explores her significant trends from the past decades as well as the present.
The line features inspiration from her concert outfits, red carpet looks, and her more contemporary fashion taste. It combines a nostalgic trip back to the 90’s, with a sexy modern spin. Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso and designer Sarah Godshaw – who worked with Courtney on the collection – state that it’s based around sleepwear and lingerie, Sarah explains “basically, things that would technically be lingerie years ago, but now you’d wear as a dress.” These influences are present in the repetitive use of lace and silk, the resemblance to sleepwear is apparent in the staple silk slips notably worn by Ms Love, but combined with fishnets and pumps it blurs the lines between nightwear and daywear; grunge and sweet.
Many of the pieces are influenced by the ‘kinderwhore’ trend which was popularised by Courtney Love in the early 90’s. Babydoll dresses are a key element in this trend, as are slip dresses, and Mary Jane shoes. Giving the line a strong essence of femininity that kindly contrasts the sex appeal of the lace and fishnet. A paradigm of sugar and spice.
This collaboration certainly manifests the first lady of grunge, it embodies her unapologetic attitude, and strong personality whilst remaining beautifully feminine. Coutney Love described the initial inspiration for her line being “lingerie meets real world.”
Some of the pieces in the collection are iconic Courtney Love 90’s looks. For example, the babydoll look that she regularly adorned on stage. She states that “two dresses that are modernized from really famous ones I wore back in the day” and describes it as feeling “new and nostalgic at the same time”. Much of the inspiration was taken from outfits she wore in the 90’s and had retained in her closet, “I always take vintage and re-adapt it” she says.
The kimono channels Stevie Knicks, but has been sported by Courtney on stage with her statement fishnets as a more modern look, a sense of class without shedding her grunge roots.
The Love, Courntey line has proven to be a success, the veteran rockstar and actress, is not done proving she is more than Kurt Cobain’s widow. It’s selling out fast, which isn’t really a surprise, considering this limited collection is being sold at very competitive prices. The multi-faceted Courtney Love has materialised yet another talent with this unapologetically sassy collection. A few pieces, including the lace bodysuit are already sold out and many are limited availability, despite only being launched a few days ago on the 14th. There is however an option to receive an email notification if and when the product is back in stock.
Love has a very colourful employment history: Stripper, rockstar, actress, and now fashion designer, and even at 51 years old she’s still pulling talents out of her sleeve.
