With the internet being a youth-dominated market, it’s inevitable that among the thousands of makeup and beauty tutorials, there aren’t many people who dedicate themselves to creating tutorials tailored to older women. Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden has challenged this issue by diving into the world of ‘vlogging’, filming her own beauty advice videos aimed at older generations. The star, whose showbiz CV is already packed with success, has taken to YouTube, showing fans the behind the scenes of her hair and makeup routines. The 45-year-old’s first video was posted last month, and has already been viewed over 14,000 times.
Each of the seven videos shows makeup artist Christian Vermaak, who also works with singer Kylie Minogue, creating Amanda’s looks whilst she provides commentary. Aside from using this opportunity to share her beauty knowledge, Amanda explains in the first video that she set up the channel ‘because it seemed to be a good thing to do and I’ve got a lot to say. And no one can edit this because it’s all me’. A source commented further on this statement, saying ‘She’s seen all the YouTubers and feels there’s no one there for her age range. She always gets asked online about her hair and make-up, so it’s something she’s definitely going to continue throughout Britain’s Got Talent.’
While most beauty gurus such as Zoella – who now has a whopping 10 million subscriber count – started in their teens several years ago, the mother of three created her channel just last month. So far, Amanda’s videos feature both face and body makeup, with one video beginning with the celebrity saying ‘As I’m wearing quite a short dress today and we’re doing a photo shoot, we’re going to show you – well Christian is going to show you – how to do body makeup. We’re going to make my legs look really shiny and tanned’. Amanda then talked her audience through what Christian was doing, explaining ‘Cover the sides of the leg with the darker Mac body make-up, then get the lighter one go down the front. This is literally like contouring the leg.’
Amanda is also a keen makeup enthusiast herself, showing off some of her own makeup looks in several videos. What makes the star’s YouTube channel different from the hundreds of others is her unique sense of humour. Fans were delighted to hear Amanda refer to false eyelashes as ‘pube lashes’, saying ‘because we want them soft and feathery rather than a standard strip’. Amanda has had the odd negative comment saying that she needs ‘to get a few tips from the YouTube beauty gurus. Better lighting please, auto-focus camera and zoom in on the face’. However, the overall response has been overwhelmingly positive, with fans both young and older sharing their love for Amanda.
