Whenever I think about the new full skirt trend, I look back to the moment when Carrie meets Aidan at the market in Abu Dhabi. The skirt, the top, the accessories – it is just utter perfection. So, how does a woman of limited funds afford outfits picked by Patricia Field? I can’t, not at the moment anyway. As I stroll down Grafton Street in Dublin pondering life and imagining my perfect full skirt – it just comes to me. My trip to London is in a few days time and I envisioned myself shopping on Oxford Street Carrie-esque. A black long skirt, a flowing striped tee and a pair of pumps with a loud colored bag. Where will I find these?
Now, it is time to imagine big and a time to be practical. In a perfect world where I am a well known journalist, with glamour oozing from my pores, what would I have gotten. Maybe a J.W. Anderson pleated full skirt? Maybe a THEORY stripped leather top with a Saint Laurent Monogramme leather shoulder bag for an added touch of color? Yes, that would be fashion precision. Alas, this is not my current budget. But, I vow here and now, I will walk into Gucci one day, with my head held high, and buy at least one item with no fear or regret.
Back to reality, I have found my high street equivalent. If your weekly budget has a 20% area where you can buy the latest trends let’s use it. I would choose the Zara knee-length fine pleat skirt in black at £45.99. The short striped H&M top at £6.99. And, for a stand out bag, I would take the Zara Tortoiseshell Minaudiére leopard print clutch at £49.99. Now, I am ready for my chic moment.
The great thing about London that we must not forget is that the weather can be very nice. Whereas in Ireland, unfortunately, an umbrella is a must in my handbag every day of the year. So, if you can risk a gorgeous skirt with or without the tights, I have two words for you – Do It. Whether you are catching a play on the West End, grabbing a spot of lunch in Covent Garden or going to The Vogue Festival, that I luckily get to go to this weekend, this outfit is the perfect choice. It is fashion forward and it will take you perfectly from day to night.
Let’s reflect for a moment – what is it about the full skirt? Why has it, from Hollywood to Hong Kong, become a fashion frenzy? Well, it is classy, stylish, elegant and glamorous. It is much better to be seen walking down the road in a classy full skirt than in a bodycon bandeau with a pair of Ugg boots. It is suitable for all body shapes and guaranteed to give you the nonchalant look Jessica Alba so beautifully pulls off. A knee length skirt is for all ages and all events. So, my advice to you is get down to the high street, embrace the full skirt and invest in this effortless look. Buy now or forever hold your peace.
