First impressions count. In a fraction of a second, even before your face has been consciously processed, you’ve made that all important first impression! Yes that’s right, a fleeting glimpse is all it takes and whether you like it or not, in a blink of an eye strangers have subconsciously labelled you, archived you, and associated you, probably for evermore, with specific personality traits. That first impression strangers form will be used as a reference for how they should interact with you, and so probably determines your future relationship with them.
How you are perceived is everything! So who you really are inside is not as important as who you appear to be.
So those who appear to be confident, attractive and well-groomed are subconsciously credited with several positive attributes. Who are you portraying ?
Don’t despair! You’re not literally being taken on “face value” , because you’re not being judged solely on your face, which let’s face it (no pun intended) you’ll have difficulty changing, apart from make up, unless you go under the knife. Thankfully people also take in and judge you based on what you wear and how you accessorise! Which of course are much easier to change.
There’s no need to spend a fortune on designer gear to look the part. There are a myriad of ways you can turn your high-street buys into haute couture looks, and no-one has to know! As long as you look expensively attired then strangers will assume you bought expensive and so enhance your status and standing in their eyes! Here’s what we suggest you do:
Invest on statement pieces but save on your “timeless classics”: Confused about what you should be spending your salary on? Well the truth of the matter is, you’ll get more wear out of your basic, timeless-classic pieces than any statement pieces, which means that whether your basics are high or low priced, it doesn’t matter as both will wear out before you know it! So go cheap on basics and go all out on statement and on-trend wear!
Change the buttons: It’s about time you put those compulsory boring sewing lessons you had at school to use, no excuses! Changing the cheap looking high-street buttons to more sophisticated ones is the simplest way to jazz up an outfit!
Cut any excess threads: Most clothes we purchase from high-street stores have dangling threads, make sure you cut them off for a cleaner finish!
When in Doubt, Go Dark: Darker colours always look more expensive! Not only do darker clothes make putting an outfit together, much easier, but imperfections are also less visible (and for all you clumsy ones, no-one will notice if you spill that drink, well unless you smell funny!)
Get It Fitted: Since you’ve bought a low priced blazer from Primark why not spend a little more to get it tailored; fitted to your shape and size. It’ll be worth it!
Keep It Smooth and Simple: You know the saying, “less is more”, it’s time to put it into practice! Avoid wearing distressed fabrics as they tend to look worn out and old! There are exceptions with ripped jeans, which can look chic, especially when in black.
Also avoid going OTT with layers and accessories…But maybe add a statement necklace!
Drape It: Whether it’s a blazer, a coat, a cardigan or a jacket, drape it over your shoulders for an effortlessly chic result.
Add a Skinny Scarf: When we think of expensive clothing we think chic, classy and elegant. Adding a skinny scarf round your neck does all that for you!
Look after your clothes and acces: From stuffing your bags to help maintain the shape, to using the correct hangers or taking your clothes to the dry-cleaners, there are many ways to keep them looking brand new and high-priced all year round!
