NERD (Short for: Nobody Ever Really Dies) have been quite scarce for some time. The trio consisting of Pharrell, Chad and Shay have not released any music together since 2010 – leaving us fans with the ever underwhelming album: Nothing. Since then Pharrell has gone solo – taking part in interesting ventures, such as creating bizarre chairs around the world.
Of course, life-like chairs was not what the fans wanted. In fact it seemed that much of our hopes of hearing the unique and compelling sound of the Neptunes and N.E.R.D once again, were dwindling. However in 2013, a glimmer of hope came our way, with many features and producing for Robin Thicke, Mac Miller and Snoop Dogg (or Snoop lion? I wish he’d decide on what animal he wants to be). Not to mention just last year, when Pharrell Williams released his solo album: Girl.
With the release of Girl, we heard a very light and joyful style from the music mogul. Songs such as: Happy, and the recent song: Freedom, seem to portray a family friendly, pop vibe. This is of course a stark contrast to die-hard fans who are used to hearing more explicit content from Pharrell and his pals.
Which brings us to some good news! During a twitter iheart conversation between himself and fans, he shocked his followers with a surprise revelation. When asked, “are you going to make another N.E.R.D album”, Pharrell replied “of course!”. This confirmation has gotten many excited at the three coming together again. As although a Happy and bubbly sound is nice to hear from Pharrell, as of late – we just can’t get enough of the gritty and unapologetic sound, that can only be found within N.E.R.D.
