Shame is a self-assigned emotion that stems from the embarrassment of publicly exposing defects of ourselves. But all too often we assign shame to one another, particularly women, usually for what is deemed “unladylike” behaviour. There are very few reasons that should stop women doing what they want, and what other people think is definitely not one of them.
1. Bodily noises
Contrary to popular belief, women do in fact fart. And yet we’re expected to excuse ourselves and walk out the room, out the house, out the country and release our unfeminine gasses away from humanity. Or endure the pain of carrying around heavy bloat all day. Now that’s not to say farting and burping in enclosed public places is acceptable, it’s basic good manners to be considerate to others and avoid doing things which would offend their senses. But if a woman happens to let one slip, don’t be so quick to find offence, just open a window.
Places get hot and our bodies react to it: sweating occurs. No matter how much antiperspirant we layer on, it’s not always effective. That upper lip will moisten; those armpits will clam up. Unfortunately, this isn’t the Victorian era and adorning our outfits with oversized fans isn’t as common.
We’re all human, we sometimes perspire in public. Don’t (or do) sweat it.
3. Adjusting underwear
Satan apparently has control over a woman’s undergarments, he’ll make your under wiring stab you in the boobs, and yank your underwear right up your bum. It’s either live with longing discomfort or stick your fingers up there and release the fabric from your crack. This also applies to pulling tights up at the crotch when they have a habit of riding down. There’s no shame in adjusting yourself in public, we clearly get no pleasure from it so quit with the eye rolling. Also there is no shame in having a ladder in your tights. When you’re in a rush in the morning and you yank your last clean pair of tights up a little too hard, that little rip isn’t anyone’s concern.
A pint at the pub with your mates isn’t exclusive to men. If you want a pint or a glass/bottle of wine, you should be able to enjoy it guilt free. There’s also no shame in drinking alone in the pub or at home, whether it’s a result of a long week, or you just fancy a lone drink, you don’t need to justify it.
5. Wearing comfortable shoes
Whether it’s a day in the office or a night out, don’t be so quick to judge a woman’s choice to wear comfortable shoes. You don’t know the week she’s had, you don’t know how clumsy she is, or maybe she just prefers a shoe she can chase a taxi down in. No matter her reason, sky-high stilettos simply aren’t for everyone. Women shouldn’t be ashamed of their footwear choice.
6. Visible underwear/nipples
Sometimes women’s skirts are a little tight and you can see the outline of her knickers, sometimes her shirt is quite sheer and you can see her bra. There is clearly no shame in noticing that someone put on underwear. However, forgoing the bra completely is also something women shouldn’t be ashamed of. Visible nipples were a recurring trend in the 90’s, particular for the Friends characters, but for some it’s just a matter of comfort.
Embrace the nipple, embrace the cleavage.
