A US Record Store Wants To Start Selling Marijuana

Amoeba Music is an independent music chain with stores in San Francisco, Berkeley and Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. The California institution is known for being one of the world’s largest independent record chains, however they reported losses in the last few years and now co-owner Dave Prinz thinks opening a real life weed dispensary may help bring in the much needed revenue.  Read more below.

Amoeba Music which is on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley is hoping to boost sales by offering more than just that vintage vinyl. The record store now also wants to start selling marijuana. According to The Daily Cal, Amoeba is competing for a permit to open a medical marijuana shop inside its Classical and Jazz music section, however, this is a separate area from the main store they added. It was also reported that Berkeley City officials plan to hold a community meeting to listen to what the public has to say and they will look into considering all the applications put forward.

Co owner Dave Prinz added- “We need supplemental income,” he told East Bay Express. “That’s the real truth. This helps keep us open and enables us to do some amazing shit.” They have already tried out this method for a year in their San Francisco branch, and Prinz hopes that – if all goes to plan – they will get to open this weed dispensary in the jazz and classical section in the Berkeley store. Brian Zisk, the founder of the SF MusicTech Summit, says that “the plan will work out perfectly for the store”. “Physical media is toast, I hate to say it,” he said. “One problem is, people no longer have the means to play physical music. Once that happens, that part is gone.” “Music and weed go together like – music and weed. People are already getting stoned and ending up at Amoeba. They’re going to spend four times as much.” he also added- “That street could really frickin’ use this,” -“Amoeba has some really good friends who really grow some beautiful strains.”
