The Best Makeup Products for Black Women

Lately, black women have been able to find their foundation shades, and this is all thanks to brilliant brands like Iman Cosmetics and most recently, Fenty Beauty who have changed the game. Ultimately sparking discussions about diversity and inclusivity in the beauty industry. Now we have well-known brands such as L’Oréal, Estee Lauder and Dior who have expanded their makeup range to cater for women of colour. In addition to this is, black women now have options, and the new impeccable formulas will have you looking flawless no matter your skin tone. So I decided to speak with a few friends and also did a poll online to see what makeup brands black women love right now, and here are the results.

Foundation

Nars Natural-Radiant-Longwear Foundation

Fenty Beauty Pro Filtr Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, £27.00: This foundation is highly talked about, and lives up to the hype. Available in 50 shades with several darker tone options. It also offers a soft, matte look and medium to full coverage. I find its oil-free formula ideal for black skin, and it works perfectly against sweat. If you are yet to find a fitting match for your skin tone, then look no further.

Nars Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation, £35.00: Most black women seem to love this particular Nars foundation. Probably because it blends perfectly onto the skin. Nars also provides alternatives like Natural Radiant Long Wear, Sheer Glow and All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation. All of which offers matte, as well as lightweight to full coverage.

Concealer

Too Faced Born This Way Concealer, £25.00

Too Faced Born This Way Concealer, £25.00 offers a brilliant formula that enhances a variety of dark-skinned complexions. Whether it’s concealing, contouring, or sculpturing this multi-tasking formula gives a faultless coverage.

Other concealers loved by black women include; Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, MAC Studio Finish Concealer SPF 35 and Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick

Pressed Powder

Iman Luxury Pressed Powder, £21.95

If you’re a black woman that loves makeup, you’ll know the story of the legendary Iman who has paved the way for more diversity in the industry. This paraben-free powder is available in five versatile shades with medium coverage. Its silky formula equally controls oil leaving a flawless, matte finish.

Transluscent Powder

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder black women makeup

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder 29g, £32.00

We live in an era that beauty is consistently changing. Only recently, translucent powder became very popular, and the Laura Mercier powder is at the top of the list. Mainly because it helps controls shine, set makeup and offers a matte finish. I only started incorporating translucent powder into my makeup routine a few years ago. And although I’ve grown to love it, I can go for several weeks without using it. Meanwhile, other black women use this instead of pressed powder while others don’t use it at all.

Others include Sacha Cosmetics Buttercup Setting Powder and Charlotte Tilbury Magic Powder.

Highlighter and Bronzer

Sleek Makeup

Sleek MakeUP Copperplate Highlighting Palette, £9.99

You cannot go wrong with a Sleek highlighter or bronzer; they genuinely make you stand out. This rich copper duo-toned gold offers the ultimate glow. One thing we love about Sleek is they are always creating new palettes that work perfectly on dark skin toned women.

Too faced highlighter, Fenty Kilawatt Freestyle and Nyx born to glow are also highly rated by black women.

Eyeshadow

Juvia eyeshadow black women makeup

Juvia’s Place The Warrior Eyeshadow

Whether it’s the ZuluAfrique or Nubian palette, Juvia’s Place provides the ultimate range for women of colour who love to experiment with their eyeshadow—offering a selection of shades made explicitly for darker skin tones.

Lipstick

MAC Matte Lipstick Ruby Woo, £17.50

Every black woman’s go-to lipstick is this long-wearing retro shade that offers an intense red colour that suits almost every black woman if not all.

Sandra, 34 says ruby woo is a oldie but a goodie and my all time favourite. Aisha, 39, says I used to love Mac until I found out that Primark bangs differently and it is super affordable too.
