Britney Spears: The Fight For Her Freedom

Britney Spears, a cultural and music icon. She has been a part of so many people’s lives, whether that be personally or through her music. Starting out as that glamorous, musical genius, many of us remember the highs and lows of her career. Now, with her conservatorship now receiving backlash, the controversy of what really is happening has reached the world.

The Conservatorship

Britney Spears recently testified in court about the conservatorship she has been under for 13 years. This isn’t the first time she has made allegations about her treatment. Britney first spoke to a court in 2019 concerning this issue. Although, this is the first time Britney herself has spoken publicly in such detail about the arrangement.

Britney was put under conservatorship after her 2007 breakdown, meaning that since then she has had no real control over her life. Being under conservatorship means someone is incapable of having control of their finances and other important aspects of their life and their life decisions. Britney has now informed the judge and the court about the abuse and exploitation she has endured since then, and that she wants it to end.

Public Outcry

Since the release of Britney’s hearing to the public, the public outcry has sparked even more. There has always been a sense of support for Britney with how she has been presented in the media. The launch of the #freebritney movement in 2019 was one aspect that definitely contributed to global support, as well as the release of the documentary ‘Framing Britney Spears’. As well as from the public, Britney has also received countless support from stars from across the globe. This included various tweets from Mariah Carey, Keke Palmer, Andy Cohen, and many more. Fans have criticised some of Britney’s family for not doing more to help the star. This included her younger sister, Jamie-Lynn, who defended herself on Instagram for not speaking about the issue.

Britney’s Choice

Britney herself was never consulted at the beginning of the conservatorship and since then has reportedly been denied access to her children, a phone, friends, and her fortune. She has also made a 911 call to report herself as a victim of conservatorship abuse.

Since the hearing, many central figures in the conservatorship have now resigned, almost proving what we all believe to be true. Britney’s manager, Larry Rudolph, has now stepped down, citing that he was never part of the conservatorship. Although, the testimony has included several unfavorable references to her management team. Britney’s attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III has resigned, and the wealth management firm Bessemer Trust also pulled out as co-conservator.

Britney has requested and is reportedly opposed to her father returning to his role as the sole conservator. Spears ‘strongly prefers’ Jodie Montogomery, who has run her conservatorship since her father stepped down in 2019. However, she has declared that her conservatorship is voluntary and would like to have gradual autonomy over her life and affairs. As well as reporting that Britney wants her father suspended from running her estate, it also revealed that her father appointed a new manager without Britney’s approval or letting her know the cost.

The Future

Experts believe it is unlikely that Britney will be freed completely from the conservatorship. However, with support for Britney getting stronger everyday, Britney isn’t going to lose hope. She has stated that hope is the one thing that she has and will always have. There has been more coverage in the past month about this battle than in the past decade. Britney is now able to hire her own legal representation and now drives alone, which has reportedly made her very ‘happy’. Although small steps in terms of her complete freedom, the battle of her conservatorship is moving in the right direction. Meaning Britney, as well as everyone else, has to stay hopeful.
