Drake Signs to UK Grime Label

One of the biggest global names in hip-hop has signed to UK independent grime label ‘Boy Better Know’. Well, according to his Instagram anyway, after an amazing hot performance with Rihanna at the Brit Awards, he left immediately to a small venue in Shoreditch, East London and made a surprise appearance with Section Boyz.

After the performance, Drake announced that he was “the first Canadian signed to BBK”. For those who know grime, you may have heard of BBK. Boy Better Know is an independent grime label founded in 2005 by the brothers Skepta and JME. Until now their biggest artist was Wiley, however, his top selling records came out on a different label. But they act more like a collective of artists than just a label, performing gigs together under the label.

Drake’s love affair with Boy Better Know has been made public for a while now. He brought Skepta out to perform Shutdown at his headline set at Wireless Festival last year. Drake has been pictured wearing a Boy Better Know T-shirt, and also he thanked Skepta in the credits for his mixtape. Drake and Skepta have also appeared together on Wizkid’s Ojuelegba remix and Drake has made the connection even more official with a ‘BBK’ tattoo. Despite Drake and Skepta’s blossoming friendship, this announcement still comes as a shock and this is a big game changer for UK grime.
