As someone new to Bahraini cuisine, I was genuinely blown away by every dish I got to try at Villa Mamas. This cosy gem honours Bahrain’s rich culinary heritage; each plate is a heartfelt tribute to the flavours of the Gulf. Tucked away in the streets of Chelsea, Villa Mamas is more than just a restaurant, it’s a soulful celebration of Khaleeji heritage.

Founded in 2012 by Chef Roaya Saleh, Villa Mamas brings the warm spirit of Bahraini hospitality to London, blending age-old recipes with modern Middle Eastern flair. With every bite, you’re transported to a family gathering with a lovingly prepared home-cooked meal.
Since its beginnings in Bahrain, Villa Mamas has grown into a global culinary destination, opening its London outpost in 2017, followed by locations in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Blending elevated dining with a warm, communal spirit, it offers a soulful celebration of Middle Eastern flavours and heartfelt Gulf hospitality.

At the heart of it all is the inspiring Chef Roaya, a pioneer in modern Middle Eastern cuisine who has redefined how the world experiences Khaleeji food. Her passion for seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, combined with the culinary traditions passed down through generations creates dishes that feel both familiar and refreshing.
From the moment you step inside, Villa Mamas feels like home. The scent of freshly ground spices, slow-cooked lamb and saffron fills the air, inviting you to linger. The interiors are thoughtfully curated; earthy tones, golden touches, and cultural accents that reflect the vibrance of Gulf tradition with a London twist.

I didn’t know what to expect from Bahraini cuisine, but Villa Mamas completely won me over—each dish more delicious than the last. Whether it’s the Mama’s Chicken Machboos (a fragrant rice dish layered with spice and soul), Mozat Laham, a tender, slow-braised lamb shank with pine nuts and vermicelli rice or the addictive Beetroot Labneh with za’atar and pomegranate, every plate has a story. And dessert is also on another level—the Date Pudding with saffron toffee sauce is truly something special. Vegetarians, meat lovers, spice seekers and comfort food fans alike will find something to swoon over.
If you’re a visiting foodie, or simply curious about the rich, underrated world of Gulf cuisine, this is your moment to indulge in something extraordinary. Chef Roaya Saleh set out to create a space that feels like home, and she’s done exactly that except this home just happens to serve some of the best Middle Eastern food in London.
